The Right Way to Change a Car Battery

It can be quite frustrating when you’re about to start your car to begin driving around Dyersburg, and it won’t start. This is likely due to a dead battery which needs to be replaced. Let’s learn more about how to disconnect and install a car battery:

Disconnecting Your Old Battery

  • Place your car in park and ensure it is off. Apply the parking brake.
  • Often, the battery will be in the front of the engine on either the left or right side.
  • The negative(-) cable should be removed first. It’s important to not let the wrench touch the positive and negative terminals at the same time.
  • Now that the negative cable is removed, you can go ahead and disconnect the positive.
  • If there is a compartment that holds the battery in place, remove this also.
  • Once the old battery is removed, take it to a trusted dealership to exchange it for a new one. Do not throw it in the trash.

Attaching the New Battery

  • Remove any corrosion on the terminals with a wire brush.
  • Place the battery into the compartment.
  • Attach the cable to the positive (+)terminal first.
  • Next, attach the negative (-) cable. It’s critical that you connect the cables in this order to prevent shorts or electric shock.
  • Start the engine, and make sure it turns over.
